Thanksgiving Without Daddy
When Jason got his new job a few months ago we were all terribly happy (and proud of him). Happily it has been going very well, and Jason is very happy with it. The one problem with it though is that it means that he isn’t always able to be with us for important times. Like doctors, police, and firemen, a security officer’s job never stops. I looked at so many people complaining about the stores now opening on Thanksgiving because it’s terrible to make anyone work on the holiday, and it surprised me how me people seem to forget that a lot of people still do have to work on the holiday. For us having Jason being gone for holidays is just going to become an unfortunate side effect of his job, but on this Thanksgiving I’d say we were all very thankful that he has a good job that he likes whether it means working the holiday or not.
The semester I worked in Disney I had to work a lot of holidays. It’s a bummer, but you do what you have to do. To make it still seem like the holidays to me I did special little things (of course I didn’t have any family with me either, so it was a double bummer). I wanted Jason to still be able to enjoy the holiday so I decided to make some special food for him to take with him to work. Unfortunately I didn’t think about it until Tuesday night, so I wasn’t able to do too much this time. It also doesn’t help that there is no way for him to heat any food up at work, so there is only so much that I could send.
Luckily Jason’s shift doesn’t start until 3:00, so we got to still spend the morning with him. Nick was a happy little guy for the most part, so he ran around the house playing while Jason and I lugged Christmas decorations upstairs and set some things up. It was such a nice morning, especially considering the beautiful weather. Jason left for work around 2:00, and not long after Nick and I left for my aunt and uncle’s. It was strange going to family dinner without Jason, and I must say I really missed a second set of hands for carrying everything. To be honest the holiday was a bit weird because we were going to my family’s for Thanksgiving. Since Jason and I started dating (over ten years ago!) we decided that Thanksgiving would be celebrated with Jason’s family and Easter would be with mine. Since Jason wouldn’t be home for the holiday though I thought I celebrate with my family for the first time in ten years.
Nick and I had a good time, even though we did miss Jason. Nick was all over the place, and was especially happy when Spencer, his newest cousin to be, arrived after dinner. Spencer is nine and Nick followed him around the house like a puppy. Spencer was so good with Nick. It was a strange concept to me that I didn’t have to constantly watch Nick because he was off playing with someone. I could get used to that!
I’m sure that having Jason gone for the holidays is going to take some getting used to, but it is going to become the norm for us. He’s going to get Christmas Eve off, since it’s his normal day off, but he has to work Christmas. Luckily he still gets to be home in the morning to celebrate with us, but it will be sad not getting the whole day together. Oh well, you do what you have to do.
