Backup Everything!

Sharing is caring!

When it comes to my camera I go crazy about backing everything up.  Before I’ll delete pictures from the memory card I make sure that the picture has been uploaded to the computer, saved onto a photo sharing website, and burned onto a CD.  Once I have made sure that the picture is indeed on the CD then I will finally feel safe to delete the picture from the memory card.  You’d think that being such a stickler for saving pictures would make me the same with videos, but sadly that hasn’t been the case.
Just after lunch on Saturday I realized that my tablet would no longer charge.  I spent much of the afternoon researching the problem and trying different suggestions to fix it, but nothing worked.  Finally I came to the conclusion that I needed to take it to Best Buy.

It didn’t take long for the guy at Best Buy to figure out that the tablet had an internal problem that was keeping it from charging.  Since the tablet was still under warranty they would replace it.  There was a problem though in the fact that they don’t sell my model anymore (I only bought it last March).  Instead I could pick out any new tablet I wanted and the amount I spent on the first one would be applied to the new one.

This really threw me for a loop.  I had spent weeks researching tablets last year, and now I had to choose one blind!  I had a really hard time making up my mind.  Especially since none of the tablets were the same price as my old one.  The whole thing made my head hurt.  I finally went with the newest model of my brand which had twice the memory of my old one.  Of course then then we had to wait in the very long customer service line to make the exchange, and it was almost dinner time.  We all just wanted the whole thing to be done.

It wasn’t until later that night when I was getting the new tablet setup that it dawned on me that I had videos of Nick on the old tablet.  I felt sick over the loss, and it bothered me all night.  I did come to realize that two of the four had been uploaded to Facebook, so they weren’t all lost to me.  I did lose my favorite one of Nick babbling to his reflection in a mirror though.  When I went to bed on Saturday I was all set to get up the next morning and call Best Buy to see if anything could be done.

After sleeping on it though I realized that, while I was sad I had lost some special videos, going through the hassle of getting in touch with Best Buy and dragging Nick with me to the store to get the videos restored (if it was even possible) was almost more work than it was worth (and they were worth a lot of work).  I also realized that I hadn’t even had my tablet for a year, so while Nick has changed he hadn’t changed so much that I couldn’t recapture similar special moments again.  He still babbles and truthfully his babbling is even cuter now!  Two nights ago I tapped him playing in the tub (I had lost one like that) and I immediately uploaded it to the free web storage that came with my tablet.

I’ve learned from my mistake.  It was a terrible lesson to learn I’ll say that.  I hope you always backup your pictures and videos.  Now I need to go create more wonderful memories!

What do you use to backup your picture and video files?

  1. Yes it was very sad. The 50th wedding one. Oh, well we still have all the good memories. That is the best thing. I think at one time or another we have all lost special things because we did not back them up. Thank you for reminding us again to back up everything.

  2. I had this same issue happen after my wedding. I lost half of our honeymoon photos. After that, I have been really careful with photos. I even bought an external hard drive so I feel safer.

    1. Oh no :-(. I don’t remember you mentioning that before (although I probably just forgot). Jason has an external hard drive for his computer although we’ve had problems there too. He had uploaded video from my grandparents 50th wedding anniversary cruise (we did Disney of course 😉 ), and he went to go edit it and it was all gone. He’d taped over the tape by then too, so we lost that too. It’s all so sad :-(.
