Bats and Spiders, Spiders and Bats
There is a Little Einsteins episode where the group goes into a cave. As they go they chant, “bats and spiders, spiders and bats,” over and over. Nick was watching that episode on my tablet on our way home yesterday and he kept chanting that over and over (it was really cute). We stopped at CVS and as we entered he acted like it was the cave and we had to say, “bats and spiders, spiders and bats.” He thought it was the best fun, but I had no clue that I was going to live it!
Early this morning, at around 3:00, I was woken up by a click clicking sound from the area of our window. I thought I was hearing something like bunny nails on the rocks outlining our little garden there. I figured they were trying to eat my flowers so I got up to investigate. When I moved the curtain I saw something crawling up the window screen (it’s really tall) on the inside!!! I thought it was a mouse or a chipmunk. Looking back I can’t believe I thought it was a mouse because it was way too big. In my sleepy state I had the brilliant idea to close the window and trap it. What we would have done then I don’t know, but I didn’t get to figure out because when I started to move it fell off the screen. I screamed bloody murder and went running out of the room.
Then I started screaming for Jason upstairs. He came running down and I told him what I thought I had seen. He turned on the bedroom light by the door and the bat started flying around! He pulled the door shut as fast as he could, but then we weren’t sure what to do. Jason finally decided to go outside and open up the screen to let the bat out. Well, let me tell you that no one is breaking into our house by pushing that screen open.
We have a lot of spiders around our house and they are always making webs in our windows, so the fist thing that happened when Jason went to open the screen is he walked into a big spiderweb and the spider fell on him. He came back inside to change into pants but then realized that they were in the bedroom with the bat. He did grab his coat though to cover up his arms.
When he went back out the second time he got the screen open just a little before a bat outside swooped down on him. I was inside and heard him yell and figured the bat had flown out. He then came back in frustrated as could be trying to think of another plan. My only thought was to open all the doors and windows and try to corral it outside, but Jason was afraid the bat would get lost in the house. He instead put a hat on, grabbed the broom (to help pry the screen), and headed back out.
I was sitting inside waiting when I heard him yelling again. Then there was some banging before he came back in. Turns out he had finally gotten the screen open enough for the bat to crawl out, and after crawling out the window it had continued to crawl across Jason’s coat before flying away. I still get the shivers thinking about it! The banging had been him shutting the screen.
Luckily we did get the bat out although we still don’t know how it got in. Wouldn’t you know that Nick, whose bedroom is right above ours, slept through the whole thing! I had no clue that when I was playing with Nick yesterday that our chanting would bring us “bats and spiders, spiders and bats!”

Oh man this cracks me up! There is actually a video that my fiance put on YouTube of a bat flying around our house years ago: http://youtu.be/wxvlnCJmy1w
This would so freak me out! I saw something by my front door in the dark last night.
OMGosh! That’s super crazy! Now I got the chills!
It is like my cow story but so much grosser. I have the chills just thinking about it.
We were sitting on the back deck a few weeks ago at night and there was a bat that kept flying around the roof by the light. Only one. I kept joking I was going to buy a bat house for him and our friends said if I did, I had to paint the Batman symbol on it.
That is so crazy!
Oh MY GOODNESS! I would have flipped out! At my parents house when we were growing up, there wa a bat in the attic and I refused to sleep there for weeks!
I have to keep checking the floor…and my hair…and the walls…. I would be flipping out!!!
Eek! I can’t believe he slept through that, it sounds like it was quite the ordeal!!
OMG I would flip. ICK!
That would totally freak me out, especially being waken up from sleep by it!
That is hilarious and scary all at the same time. Glad everything turned out OK.
It reminds me of the first time my folks let me stay home sick from school ALL ALONE. I saw something running around in our basement family room and freaked out. I think I was about 8. I kept calling my dad and he thought I was making it up. Finally, our neighbor came over and realized that a squirrel had gotten in the house. It was a nightmare trying to get the squirrel out, but we finally did! The trick was an open window with a peanut butter-covered cracker sitting outside the window.
ohhhh i’ve not had a bat encounter before (only saw them at the zoo!) I would have screamed too!!
Yikes, I’m pretty sure my husband would have been screaming as loud as me if we had to deal with a bat.
Yikes it’s sure been quite a week of creepy crawlies! Glad you got rid of the bat though I don’t envy what Jason went through.
Really. This is to funny and very happy that it happen to you and not me. I guess you and your Mother have a lot to talk about. Please stay away from my home.
Oh, yikes…I totally have the creepy-crawlies now! Glad you got it out.
