Nick’s Current Focus
They always say that kids have a short attention span. They can’t sit and do anything for very long. As a teacher I know that’s true, but when it comes to my own son I simply don’t see it. Even when he was very young he could happily play for a good hour! I’m not kidding either. I know it sounds crazy, but I could put him in his crib with his crib toy on, or I could lay him on the mat of his play gym, and he would play, and play, and play! I could get so much done. The only problem was that I would have to keep turning the toys back on.
As he’s gotten older he can’t keep himself as easily entertained for long periods of time, but he’ll get onto something and he’ll just want to do it over, and over, and over. It usually is something physical, and it always seems to need an adult. A year ago it was simply walking. Since he couldn’t do it perfectly he wouldn’t even attempt it by himself. Instead he would want to hold on to someone’s hand, and we’d walk all over the house for hours. That’s all he wanted to do all day long. It was sweet, and I tried to enjoy it because I figured I’d miss it when it was over. I have to say though that I’m not too sad that he walks on his own now, but maybe that’s because he still wants to walk around holding my hand.
In fact he holds my hand all the time again because his current focus is having me help him walk up and down the basement stairs. Why does he want to do this? Honestly I don’t have a clue. Our basement is not a fun place. We have what’s called a Michigan Basement which simply put is a glorified cellar. It’s old, damp, and creepy. The basement under the original part of the house is nothing more than a large crawl space with a giant bolder. It’s not the type of place you really want to play in, but Nick loves going down there. He walks down the stairs holding my hand (I will say he’s gotten really good at walking down the stairs). Then he walks over to where we’re storing his water table for the winter. Sometimes he’ll stop to turn on the light (it has a really long pull cord). Otherwise he’ll grab a toy from the water table. Then we have to walk back up the stairs. Usually when we get to the top of the stairs we have to turn around and go right back down. Then he’ll put his toy back and grab a new one. We do this over and over. It can be so exhausting, but I guess I’m giving my legs a good work out going up and down the stairs so much!

My basement is just like yours! It gets tiring, lol! I swear we are in the same phase!
That is so crazy Mel! We’re living polar lives ;-).
I actually get it. My oldest was perfectly happy entertaining himself… until recently. He will be 4 soon, and he is constantly asking my hubby and I to play the same repetitive games over and over again. I just try to tell myself it is a good sign… of what, I don’t know… but it must be a good sign of something. 😀
I can tell it is going to be a fun Summer. Can’t wait.
Your glutes will thank him for it later. LOL.
look on the bright side, you’re getting great exercise!
My son went through phases that that too!
My sister’s basement is similar to your photo. She has a creepy outside entrance but a full basement.
Luckily the outside basement was inclosed when they added a mudroom onto the back. I’d hate to go outside to get into it!
I’m sure you are very tired of doing this. Good luck.
