Tips to Teach Your Kids to Clean their Bedrooms

The Daily Habit

Imposing your kids to clean their room daily is difficult. It is often comprised of shout, threats, bad mood, and a tired day. Even if they comply a little, it doesn’t mean they would fix their messy rooms the following day.

As a parent, you should never stop reminding your children that they need to make up their bed every morning, tidy up their books and toys after they’re done using them, and never leave used clothes lying everywhere. At a young age, children should know the importance of cleanliness and how it could affect their health.

Making this a routine helps kids instill skills and learning that will help them when they grow-up.

Teaching Kids to Clean Their Room

• Lay the right groundwork- Kids copy what adults do, so be a good example by keeping your room and house clean. When doing household chores, stay positive about the task and avoid complaining because your children could pick that as well. Eventually, children will pick it like it is a normal and expected routine.
• Define tasks they need to do- Kids are a little too literal when it comes to instructions, so you have to be clear on the tasks. Write a checklist of their tasks and make them mark the tasks they’ve already done. Adding pictures on the checklist makes the activity fun.
• Schedule a time when to do the tasks- Assign a specific time on when they should do the task. Also identify tasks that should be prioritized or should be done regularly, like making up the bedroom or putting the laundry in the hamper.
• Do chores together- It hurts if you command kids while they are doing the chores. When your schedule permits, join and help them clean. Show them how it should be done, and never raise your voice if they do not get it. The key is to lower your expectations. After all, they are just learning how to clean their room properly.

Keeping Kid’s Bedroom Clean

Making the kid’s bedroom clean is a difficult task. Even if your kids help, it is still a struggle to keep things organized. Often, even after vacuuming and hanging up clothes it still looks messy. That is where you help out. Here are some tips on how to keep your children’s bedroom nice to look at:

• Use Storage Boxes- Using storage box is an easy way to store children’s toys to keep the room organize. You just pack all the toys inside and then place it a conspicuous part of the room. What’s great about this box is your kids can do the cleaning on their own after playing with their toys.
• Make the Room Appear Bigger- A bigger room looks a bedroom clean and spacious. You can create an illusion of space by painting the walls with light colored paint. Playing with lines also makes a room bigger. Window curtains like, Harris Scarfe’s pinch pleat curtains help make a room look higher because of the vertical lines made by the pleats. Carpet or mats with lines is another playful way to improve room space.
• Hang items- Make use of the space in your walls by hanging clothes or hampers. Make sure that your kids can reach it so they can do it on their own.
• Assign Kids Pride of Place- Allow them rearrange furniture or repaint shelves in their bedroom according to their taste. This helps them take pride of their room and keep it as clean as possible.

Teaching your kids to keep their rooms clean is not just about keeping things organized and avoiding sickness. It is also a part of good parenting that they can mimic to their future family.
