When I purchased my home five years ago I got it as a bank owned property. It wasn’t in bad shape, but there were some fixes that needed to be taken care of. One of the problems was that the water softener wasn’t working correctly. I called in a repairman to have it fixed. When he left he gave me some tips about using a water softener and what to expect from my water. I know he was trying to be helpful, but even though I was a new homeowner water softener systems were not new to me. I had grown up in the country and we needed one due to well water, and now I was living in the city and needed a water softener system again. I remember one of the things he told me was how my skin and hair would feel differently now that the water softener was turned on again, and he was quite right. There are many beauty benefits to having a water softener system in your home.

What is Hard Water?

Before discussing the beauty benefits of water softener systems it’s probably good to touch on the reason that you would want to have one installed in your home and that is hard water. So what is hard water? Glad you asked! Hard water is water that has a high buildup of mineral content. These minerals being calcium, magnesium carbonate, and manganese. Have you ever noticed particularly spotty dishes, buildup in your shower, or that your laundry feels like sandpaper at times? Then you may have hard water in your home. Hard water won’t hurt you, but it isn’t good for your home appliances that use water and it’s not very good for your skin and hair either. That’s why there are so many beauty benefits of water softener systems.

Many of us spend a lot of money on bath and beauty care items such as shampoos, conditioners, body wash, and face wash, but it doesn’t matter what products you buy if you have hard water. Part of the reason for this is because hard water and soaps don’t mix. Think of soap scum on your bathroom walls. When you have hard water that’s about what happens to your skin because hard water does a really bad job at washing the soap off of your skin. This means that like your shower walls you are left with a soapy residue, and that’s as bad for your skin as it sounds.

The soapy residue can cause many problems for your skin as it can lead to clogged pores. This leads your skin to become dry and chapped which can be quite itchy. For those that suffer from eczema this can agitate the condition and cause a flareup. Besides the painful dry patches we all know what else clogged pores lead to…ACNE! You can use all of the acne kits that are on the market, but if you have blocked pores from a soapy residue left from hard water then nothing is going to truly clear your acne up.

It’s easy to see that hard water is nothing but bad for your skin, so what about your hair? I’m sure you wouldn’t be surprised to find out that it’s not good for your hair either. Do you have dry, brittle, lifeless hair? It could be from hard water. Since hard water and soaps don’t mix well it’s very difficult to get a good lather from any type of soap and that includes shampoo. This means that it takes a lot more shampoo from the bottle to get enough of a lather to actually get your hair washed. As with your skin the hard water does a poor job of washing the soap away, and now you likely would have more than needed in your hair so you’re again left with a soapy residue. The hard water also causes hair cuticles to stand up which cause your hair to feel rough and dry. This in turn leads to your hair becoming tangled and difficult to work with.

So what are the beauty benefits of water softener systems? When a water softener system is used to create soft water you won’t have any of the problems listed above. You’ll have clean hair and skin that don’t contain any soapy residue because the water actually washes it all away. When soap isn’t left on your skin or in your hair your body’s natural oils are able to work correctly to give you beautiful skin and hair.

How to Get Rid of Hard Water

The first thing you want to do if you think you have hard water is to test for it. You can do this by visiting Morton Salt and filling out a form, and then they will send you a free water test strip to determine if you have any hard water issues. The test strip is easy to use and it will tell you whether or not you need to treat your water. You’ll probably remember using a test strip like it in school when you learned about acids and bases. I actually used it myself and found that my water is still pretty hard, which is something I had been wondering about recently, so I’m going to be getting someone to check out my water softener system. Since it came with the house I don’t even know how old mine is and when we had it serviced 5 years ago it was because it leaked water.

I’m sure your question now is, what do you do if you find out that you have hard water. Get a water softener system installed in your home. It might sound like a pain to have done, but there are so many benefits of having one that go beyond the beauty benefits that we talked about. Think less soap required to clean your clothes, no more harsh water stains in your tubs, less buildup in your appliances – do I even need to list more? Soft water will save you time, money, and have you feeling and looking your best.

Water softeners are huge here in Florida because of the hard water. Thanks for sharing your post at the Over the Moon Link Party.

This was a very informative post. Thanks for describing where hard water comes from and possible solutions to combat it. It feel like I spend more time scrubbing hard water stains than i do actual dirt and grime.

Yes, hard water can be a royal pain to clean all of those minerals just love to attach themselves to something and stick there! Yet another good beauty reason to get a water softener system. All that scrubbing with cleaning supplies isn’t good for you skin and nails!

I wouldn’t either! Even if mine doesn’t seem to be working quite right it is still better than nothing!
