Can You Be Too Young To Celebrate?

Sharing is caring!

Today I would like to ask a question of all of you.  Recently I was listening to my favorite morning radio program in the car.  The producer for the show gave birth to her first child back at the beginning of July, so come Christmas day her daughter will be almost six months old.

During the program that day the producer was saying that for Christmas she wanted to get her daughter items that she would need in the coming months (clothes, a push walker, etc.).  She went on to say that when she had told this to many of her family members and friends they had given her grief for it.  They told her that her daughter was too young to receive presents because she wouldn’t understand the value and meaning of them.  They said that she shouldn’t buy her daughter presents and instead should just go to the store and buy her daughter what she needed when she needed it.

What do you think?  Is there an age that is too young to celebrate the holidays?  Do you think that buying presents for children of a certain age is pointless?  There really is nor right or wrong answer to these questions.  What it really comes down to is personal values and opinions.

It shouldn’t come as a shock that I don’t think a child is ever too young to get presents and celebrate.  Remember I was the one going to the store while in labor to buy presents for the Easter Bunny to bring Nick when he was only a few days old.

To be honest Nick doesn’t understand Christmas any more this year than he did last year.  He certainly isn’t going to open a present and say, “Thanks Mom!  I love it!”  That’s not going to make me not give him any though.  He liked getting his gifts last year, and he’ll enjoy it this year (he’s already tried to open some of the wrapped gifts).  Most importantly I’ll have the memories of how his eyes light up when he sees his presents and of the ohs and ahs he’ll make (that’s the new thing that he does now when he sees something he likes).

What are your thoughts?  Is there an age that is ever too young?

  1. Grief for that? In my humble opinion, that first Christmas is just as much about the joyous opportunity to give your child Christmas presents. Who cares if the kid remembers? The parents will always remember the feeling they had when they were able to give their children their first Christmas presents. I’ll never forget Nick’s first.
