Do I Need A Bumbo Seat?
In a word, yes! The Bumbo Seat is a wonderful baby product to have. Some kids don’t care for it, but a large majority of babies do like it. Babies love to feel like part of the family and the Bumbo Seat allows them to do that.
How We Used It
Jason and I put Nick in his Bumbo Seat at a really young age (before two months). We really wanted Nick to be able to sit up and be with us. Plus we wanted to be able to put him somewhere besides one of his swings.
When Nick was young, and holding his head up was a lot of work, he didn’t tolerate the seat for too long. As he got older and gained head strength though he started to really enjoy sitting in it.
Once Nick liked the Bumbo Seat we started using it a lot. It was so great when I did stuff in the kitchen because he could be playing in it on the counter while I got stuff done. (Note: All Bumbo Seats come with a warning stating that they should not be used on raised surfaces. If you choose to place it in such a position it is at your own risk.) I also used it in the living room a lot. I would sit on the floor and sew, or cut coupons, and Nick would sit and play right next to me.
The Tray
The Bumbo Seat Tray is sold separately (you can buy both as a set now as well, but it’s more expensive that way) and you want to make sure you get one. It changes the seat from just a place to sit to a place to play. It really made Nick go from liking his Bumbo Seat to loving it in the blink of an eye.
Pros
The Bumbo Seat is wonderful because it allows babies that can’t yet sit up on their own to see things differently. Without it babies are either put on their backs or in a reclining position with swings and bouncy seats.
The Bumbo Seat also lets babies play with new toys. I know with Nick, before he used the Bumbo Seat, he mostly was only able to play with toys that hung from his baby gym or the toy bar on his bouncy seat. Nick loved sitting in his seat and playing with the toys that we put on the tray. Toys that we could suction cup to the tray especially worked really well.
Cons
For us there wasn’t anything we didn’t like about the Bumbo Seat, but I know that’s not the case for everyone. Babies that hit physical milestones early often don’t like being trapped in it. Other kids just don’t like to sit in it. Still other babies don’t fit in it because their thighs are too chubby.
A Great Product
I consider the Bumbo Seat to be a must have baby product. While it doesn’t work for every infant most babies really like it.
Actually, I heard they’ve been recalled. They kinda look scary to me. I really didn’t like seeing my great-niece in it while sitting on a table. Babies sometimes tend to throw themselves back and I think they could tip the seat over. I never had one though, probably because they were not around when my kids were babies. My ‘babies’ are 10 and 7 years old. 🙂
Yes they were recalled not too long ago, but they just made a few adjustments to it (from what I understand), and the modified seats were put immediately back on the market. I never felt comfortable putting Nick in it on a table although he never made any moves that would make it tip.
The seat is also good when grandma takes care of Nick. You can take the seat to room to room and get a lot of cleaning done. It also give the child a chance to see other roomes in the home. One of the best thing you received as a baby gift. Love it very much.
I really loved it too. I finally just put it away last weekend. It’s so sad putting all of his wonderful baby products away.
