Sharing is caring!

I don’t know about you, but I hate running out of printer ink, and for years I have spent a fortune on it. That is until I recently signed up for HP Instant Ink! I haven’t used it for long yet, but I had to share my HP Instant Ink review with all of you!

I have to admit that printers aren’t my friend. I have stories that go back to high school of how printers and I don’t get along. I swear I have a sort of printer jinx! Which is why I found myself screaming at my printer just over a month ago. Luckily Nick was in school at the time!

I was busy printing off items that I needed to complete my taxes when I ran out of ink. Luckily I did have a box of new ink cartridges on hand. I got the box out and attempted to install the new cartridge. That’s when things went wrong.

Even though I had the correct cartridges (size and brand) they didn’t fit right. With my printer you always had to kind of force the cartridges in. The problem was that the cartridges were slightly too big and forcing them in broke the cartridge holder!

After getting past my frustration I knew that my only option was to order a new printer. In the end it wasn’t such a bad thing. My printer was about 8 years old and it didn’t get along all that well with my newer computer.

I did some research, and after reading several good reviews, went with the HP OfficeJet Pro 6978. In the reviews I read comments about people using the HP Instant Ink, but I didn’t fully realize what that was until the printer arrived.

What is HP Instant Ink?

I knew I had to write a HP Instant Ink review before I had even been using it for a full month because this system is so awesome. It takes the guess work out of figuring out when you’ll run out of ink, it saves me a fortune on ink costs, and it allows me to easily recycle my ink cartridges!

Here is how the system works:

  1. The first thing you have to do is get an Instant Ink ready printer. If you need one check out my list of HP Instant Ink ready printers listed at the bottom!
  2. Next you set-up an Instant Ink account
  3. You choose the plan you want
  4. Your printer sends a report when it’s time for more ink. The first set of ink is mailed within a few days of your account set-up so you’ll be sure to have new cartridges on hand.
  5. A box with ink and a recycling bag are mailed to you
  6. You change your ink cartridges with the new ones when the printer tells you to do so
  7. You mail back your old cartridges for recycling free of charge

Seriously, that’s the entire process! The most difficult part is setting up an HP Instant Ink account and that’s not hard at all.

The HP Instant Ink Payment Plans

There are three different HP Instant Ink payment plans that you can choose from. They are all based on the amount of pages you print every month. Basically the printer knows to send the message that more ink is needed by counting the number of pages that have been printed. Plus, you are able to rollover unused pages to the next month! The maximum amount you can have in rollover is the same as your monthly printing limit.

Think for a minute about how much money you spend every time you buy new ink cartridges. With my last printer I spent about $40 every time I bought a black and color ink set. That really added up when I bought those multiple times a year. With my new plan though I’m only spending $4.99 plus tax a month! The amount of money that I’m going to save a year is amazing!

HP Instant Ink Review Final Thoughts

I hope my HP Instant Ink review has helped you. I do plan to come back in a few months an update this post with my current feelings on the system. At this point I am totally in love with the entire system.

I know it’s not for everyone though. My mother hardly ever uses a printer at home, so to spend even $2.99 a month would be a waste for her. I on the other hand print a ton. Even at $9.99 a month I know that this program is going to save me a ton of money in the long run. I guess breaking my old printer turned out to be a pretty good thing after all.
