Alright, so really Friday was the day, but these words,k spoken by Rabbit from Winnie The Pooh, completely capture how I felt on Friday. We have been waiting months for Nick to move on his own. On Friday he finally took that step, or two steps to be exact.
I’ve been saying for a long time that Nick would skip crawling and walk first. Nick had bad reflux, and it was pretty much a given that he would get sick if he laid on his tummy. This caused him to hate tummy time. We kept trying to get him to lay on his stomach, but it was hard since he would scream and cry. When he got older, and perfected his role, he would role onto his back as soon as we put him on his tummy. Getting him to stay on his stomach was tough, so he hasn’t been building the muscles needed for crawling (all though we do work with him on it). On the other hand Nick loves to walk. For over a month now he will hold onto someone’s hands and walk all over. There are times he’s so fast that it’s all you can do to keep up with him. He often walks with a purpose too. He’ll walk towards a toy he wants to play with. Before bed every night he walks into Jason’s room to say goodnight to him. Just like other babies he wants to get to things, but he has just always preferred walking.
On Friday I was late getting to work because I had a flat tire. Jason went out to change it for me, so I was inside with Nick watching his morning shows. He didn’t want to sit with me on the couch, so I put him down to walk around. He walked right up to the T.V. He likes to stand there sometimes. It always makes me think of the scene in 101 Dalmatians when the other dogs are telling Lucky to get down because he’s blocking the T.V. I let Nick stand there a moment and then I pulled him back a little because I didn’t want him standing there too long. I was sitting on the floor with my knee propped up and Nick was half standing and half leaning against my knee. Nick had other ideas though. He wanted to stand at the T.V., so next thing I knew he had straightened up and took the two steps needed to get to it. I couldn’t believe that he had walked all by himself!
He hasn’t taken any steps by himself since, but you can tell he’s getting ready to just take off. Even yesterday morning he was ready to go. It was a very, “Here we go mom, you better help me,” type of moment. We still plan on helping him with the crawling, but he obviously decided to do things a little backwards. Even as sick as he has been for the last week (he’s getting over bronchitis) he’s still hitting milestones. We’re so proud of our little guy.
