Another Sunday Scare

Normally I spend all week looking forward to the weekend, but I’m starting to dread Sundays.  Nothing ever seems to go right on Sundays anymore.  Last week was the issue with Nick’s finger and the trip to the E.R.  This past Sunday was an allergy scare.

Major food allergy problems don’t run in our families, although I do have a citric acid allergy and Jason is lactose intolerant.  Still I got a little nervous every time I offered Nick a new food.  I made sure to wait a whole week after starting a new food before I introduced another.  As time went by though I stopped worrying since Nick didn’t show any allergy signs for anything.  Fast forward to yesterday.  I have recently started giving Nick a lot less baby food and a lot more table food.  The little fruit and veggie bites didn’t seem to be enough for him on Saturday, so for lunch on Sunday I decided to make him a scrambled egg.

He seemed to really enjoy it.  He ate quite a few bites without making any faces or spitting it out.  Then after about a fourth of the egg was gone he started coughing.  I thought he had just swallowed wrong, so I gave him some juice.  When I thought he was better I tried feeding him again, but every time I was about to put a bite in his mouth he’d start coughing again.  I wasn’t worried though because he was getting over a cold, so I figured the coughing had just aggravated the cough that he already had.  Then he started sneezing.  He had about four big sneezes, and they made him hysterical. I finally picked him up a grabbed his bottle hoping that eating it would calm him. He tried sucking it, but he didn’t take much, and what he did take mostly just pooled in his mouth. I finally gave up on the bottle and did everything I could to calm him down. It took awhile, but it did eventually happen.

Not long after I got Nick calmed down he started itching his head like his life depended on it. His cradle cap has recently come back,and he had been itching it a lot, but this was way more. We were supposed to leave after lunch to meet my mom, and since the itching seemed to be Nick’s only problem I decided to still go. The entire twenty minute drive Nick scratched his head or rubbed it against the back of his seat. By the time we had reached Best Buy (where we were meeting mom) Nick’s face was starting to look red and puffy.

We shopped for a little bit, but we were worried about Nick. He seemed very lethargic. He itched for some time, but that did eventually subside. During our shopping we noticed that other parts of his body were looking red too, so we lifted his pant leg and saw red hives all over. We stopped shopping at that point and headed to another store to get him some Benadryl.

Within five minutes of taking the Benadryl Nick started to return to his old self. At that point we were able to get him to take a bottle and eat some food (since he hadn’t had much lunch).

At the time all of this was happening I didn’t realize how serious the situation was. I’m glad he didn’t eat any more egg then he did or the situation could have been a lot worse. We’re definitely going to be discussing what happened with the pediatrician at Nick’s next well visit. They say that each reaction often is worse than the one before, so we’re going to make sure that Nick doesn’t eat eggs in any way for the time being.
