I’ve Got Plenty To Be Thankful For

By Irving Berlin

I’ve got plenty to be thankful for
I haven’t got a great big yacht
To sail from shore to shore
Still I’ve got plenty to be thankful for

I’ve got plenty to be thankful for
No private car, no caviar
No carpet on my floor
Still I’ve got plenty to be thankful for

I’ve got eyes to see with
Ears to hear with
Arms to hug with
Lips to kiss with
Someone to adore

How could anybody ask for more?
My needs are small, I buy them all
At the five and ten cent store
Oh, I’ve got plenty to be thankful for

This Irving Berlin song, sung by Bing Crosby in Paramount Pictures’ 1942 film Holiday Inn, truly sums up things in my life.  We aren’t loaded with money and possessions, but we’re so happy and thankful for what we do have.

I’m thankful for Nick.  While the last 7 months since his birth have flown by at the same time it seems that he has always been here with us.  Pardon a mother’s bragging, but he is the best little baby.  He’s so happy and not terribly fussy.  He’s so good at playing and entertaining himself.  Learning how to be a parent and what to do for him hasn’t been a walk in the park, but we’ve all been learning together.  Jason and I both know how lucky and blessed we are with him.  He is the most wonderful and amazing thing that has ever happened to us.

I’m also thankful for my home.  Last year at this time we were finally ironing the last kinks out of our mortgage and were getting ready to go to closing.  The process of getting our house was one of the worst headaches I ever had, but I’m so glad we stuck with it.  It’s not a terribly large house (of course with my personality I’d lose my mind trying to clean a huge house), but right now it’s the perfect size for us.  We’ve had a wonderful time over the past year making it our own.  I know it took some time for Jason to feel at home, but now our house has truly become a home and we’re so happy here.

I’m thankful for my wonderful family and friends.  This year having people to lean on was especially important.  From helping me clean, to watching Nick, to having a reason to get out of the house, they were all there to help me out.  Jason has been especially wonderful.  Becoming a new parent isn’t easy for a lot of guys, but Jason has been there with me every step of the way.  He helped with late night feedings (which lucky didn’t last too long – another thing I’m thankful for), he spends days home watching Nick while I work, and the fact that he’s just an all around awesome dad that loves to spend time with his son.

Lots of wonderful things have happened for us since last Thanksgiving, but it hasn’t been an easy year.  There have been a lot of ups and downs, but I’m am so thankful for the wonderful things I have.  I hope this Turkey Day finds you with many things to be thankful for.
