Sharing is caring!

April 4, 2014 Dear Nick, Well we made it through the first month of it being just us. It wasn’t an easy month though. Pretty much everything got thrown at us but the book! To start the month off you got hit with the stomach bug. You woke me up crying during the middle of the night. Why does it always happen during those awful hours? Luckily it was late enough that you didn’t have too much in your tummy, so in about two hours it was all over and we both got a little sleep. Well, you got sleep I was fighting a cold at the time so I had a very hard time getting back to sleep. I took the next day off to stay home with you which turned out to be a
very good move because only 12 hours after you I came down with the bug! Luckily you were still kind of out of it so you just laid in bed with me all afternoon. You were so quiet and good and I felt so lucky to have such a wonderful son.

We made it through that obstacle and exactly a week later we got hit with a huge snow storm. We got at least 8 inches. I don’t know how to use the snow blower, so I shoveled. I went out once before you got up and then we went out two more times. I spent a total of 3 hours that day shoveling the snow. You were so good outside and let me shovel too. You had a little shovel, so sometimes you helped me. You said we were, “cleaning up the snow.” Other times you got toys and stuff out of the garage to play with, but again we made it through.

After those two days I thought it would be smooth sailing. I celebrated my 30th birthday. The weather turned out to be nice, but the day was pretty blah. There will come a day when you’ll realize that there is nothing exciting about an adult birthday. All that happens is you get older. No fun there!

A week later though things started to get scary. Uncle David got very sick. We thought it was the flu at first, but it wouldn’t stop. He went to an emergency clinic four days later where they told him he had an internal infection. They pumped him full of fluids and sent him home with medicine. Two days later he was in so much pain he couldn’t move, so he went back to the clinic. They sent him by ambulance to a hospital in Denver for emergency surgery for a mass on his stomach. When that happened Mommy and Nana packed like crazy because we wanted to get to him. Just when we were going to pack up the car he called to say that it was just a lot of swelling and that we shouldn’t come. That turned out to be a good move because when he was let out of the hospital that night he was just as bad as before. Nana had had enough and she booked him a flight home so he could go to the hospital here. I tell you Nick we are very lucky to live where we do. The University of Michigan hospital is one of the best. They ran some tests on Uncle David. They quickly found that he had a terrible virus called C-Diff. Due to it a puss sack, the size of a fist, had formed on the outside of his intestines. He was rushed into surgery to have it drained. The doctors told him that had he waited two more days it would have burst and most likely it would have killed him. Even though he’s OK now the thought of that still scares Mommy.

So that was March. What a whirlwind huh? We were really tested, but I’d say we’re both stronger for it. Luckily we have had Nana here to help us. She’s been our rock, but now she’s had to change from helping take care of us to taking care of Uncle David. Poor Nana.

You continue to grow and thrive every day. You had a growth spurt this month, but I mostly see it in your head, feet and arms. Truthfully I’m not sure you’re done. It’s caused you to eat so much food! I guess it’s true that you’ll eat what you need and that I shouldn’t worry about it. You’re starting to eat better food too, which is a relief. You now love PB&J sandwiches, and you also really like to eat peanut butter on bananas. It is so nice to see you wanting to eat food that isn’t cookies! Hopefully April is a better month. We have a lot of stuff planned, so it is going to be a very busy and crazy month, but hopefully a fun one. I can’t believe you’re going to be turning 3! I’m not going to cry…..I’m not going to cry….
Love,
Mommy
Wow you guys did have quite a roller coaster of a month!! Hoping April is going to be much better for you both. 🙂
I enjoyed your letter to Nick. Yes, you and Nick had a very hard month and the good news is that you made it. And David made too.
