So there we were. Sitting and relaxing in our stateroom as the rain continued to fall down and our excursion left without us. Eventually Nick and I were both done with lounging around so we headed down to see Mom. We found out that in the end Grandma and Grandpa hadn’t gone on the excursion either. It hadn’t been cancelled, but Disney had given everyone that had showed up for the excursion the choice of going on the excursion or getting their money back. My grandparents hadn’t wanted to waste the money, but they hadn’t wanted to go in the rain either, so they took the refund and they got it for the rest of us as well.
After awhile it seemed that the rain was letting up, so we decided that we would leave the ship and go explore Cozumel before lunch. Jason decided he didn’t want to get off the ship (he had no desire to go shopping and be hounded by people again). The rest of us grabbed what we needed, and got ready to possibly be in the rain, and then we headed down to the first deck to head out. When we got to the gangplank we found that the rain hadn’t quite stopped. Disney was on top of the ball though and had free ponchos for everyone leaving the ship. We grabbed our ponchos, put them on, and headed out to explore.
There are a lot of different docks in Cozumel. Ours literally dumped us into this open two story mall. It was pretty neat. Plus it was covered, so it was nice to shop somewhere we weren’t getting rained on. From what we understood you had to go up to the second level of the mall to get to Cozumel. Since we had the stroller we couldn’t go up the stairs. Luckily we found an elevator. We shopped upstairs for awhile. Mom found some nice jewelry and did a great job bargaining. I went into a lot of stores, but I also tried to keep Nick moving. We had to be careful of where we walked though because it was very slippery. A girl from our ship (she probably was around 10) was on crutches and I watched her slip on the floor and go down hard. She burst into tears and I felt so bad for her.
After some decent shopping it seemed that the rain was really starting to let up, so we decided to go back down to the main level and to head out to the streets of Cozumel. We found an elevator and piled inside. Grandpa pushed the button for the first floor. I didn’t feel the elevator move, so after a moment I said something. Everyone realized that they hadn’t felt anything either, so Grandpa pushed the door open button and sure enough we were still on the same floor. The doors closed and we tried to go again, but still nothing happened. Then I had a hyperventilating moment and I demanded that Grandpa opened the doors because I wanted off! In an instant I had visions of us trapped for hours in a tiny elevator in Mexico with no one knowing where we were. Just thinking about it still makes me clammy. Luckily everyone else felt the same way. I swear I took huge gulps of breath as soon as we were off.
We were not in the mood to try another elevator even if we could find one. With no other choice available it was decided that we would walk down the escalator (they weren’t running) and Mom, Grandpa, and I would carry Nick down in his stroller. Now I wasn’t too excited about this idea, but Nick is not good with constantly getting in and out of the stroller, so I agreed. I’m happy to say that we all made it down safely.
By the time we were out of the mall we were kind of feeling shopped out. There was another Del-Sole store though, so we decided to look through it. You never know what different things you’ll find at each place. Of course we ended up buy a few more shirts too. For us that store is totally addicting! When that was done though we realized it was getting late and that we were all starting to want lunch. Nick was getting especially vocal about it, so we started the trek back to the ship. Luckily when we got back to the mall we were able to find a side entrance that allowed us into the cruise terminal. We did not want to carry Nick back up the escalator, and we were not about to get in another elevator! We breezed through security and headed back up the doc to the ship so we could go have lunch.
