Nick’s First Vacation: Getting Ready To Go (Part 3)
Wednesday
I woke up on Wednesday feeling both excited and overwhelmed. I couldn’t believe that we were less than 24 hours from leaving, but I had so much to do! For so many vacations I find myself running around on the last day and end up packing well into the night. I didn’t want that to be the case this time. For goodness sake it was my third day off. With so much time to get ready how was it that I was even having to worry about that?
I got up, did my exercising, and got ready for the day as fast as I could. Luckily Nick decided not to sleep too late. This meant that we could get out of the house to run our errands sooner, and as soon as breakfast was done we left. Our first stop was the bank where the teller couldn’t get over how cute Nick was. Even as we were walking out I heard her tell someone else, “he is such a cute little boy.” After that we went to Meijer. Even though I thought I had already gotten everything we could possibly need for vacation I found that we were still missing some things.
Just as I had thought, it took us awhile to get all of the errands done. It was around noon when we arrived home, so I unloaded our purchases and quickly made some lunch. I’m so lucky that Nick is such a go with the flow kind of kid. He may have a big appetite, but he rarely has a problem waiting for food to be served. I’m really not sure how I lucked out on that one. As we were eating I thought about all that I had to do still. I had wanted to get home a little earlier, but I felt we hadn’t done too bad. The only thing that I could really find that wasn’t going right for the day was that a slight headache that I had woken up was starting to become a big massive headache. I kept thinking that a migraine was not what I needed right then.
After lunch I decided to attempt putting the Halloween stuff up. I know it sounds weird to put it up on the 26th of September, but I knew that if I didn’t get it done before we left than it would never happen. Nick was not ready for a nap, so I needed something to keep him occupied. I decided to put on Lion King 1 1/2. It was the movie of the week on Disney Junior that week, and he had been loving the commercials. Just as I thought he loved the movie. Of course he loves movies with animals. He especially thinks that animals running is hysterical. As I put everything up Nick switched from watching the movie to playing with Halloween stuff. By the time the movie was done the decorations were all up and Nick was ready for a nap.
Once I had Nick all settled for some sleep I went downstairs to put the decoration totes away and then started tackling the huge project that is packing. Packing can be such a headache, and it seemed to make mine worse. By mid afternoon my bad headache was a full blown migraine. It was the type that’s so bad that I felt I could get sick (sorry little TMI there). The worst part was that when I get them that bad they always last for three straight days no matter what I do, and the last thing I wanted while riding in a car for hours on end was to be sick with a migraine. I made myself some coffee, but it wasn’t enough and I knew I needed something stronger, so I headed out to get a McDonald’s Mocha. Nothing on Earth works better for my migraines.
The Mocha helped some, and I was able to get a lot of packing done before Nick woke from his nap. Once he was awake I went upstairs and finished getting all of his stuff packed. Then I did a few more things before dinner. Dinner that night was hot dogs. At the time it was one of Nick’s newest favorite foods, and I knew it wouldn’t create much of a mess in the kitchen which was good because I had better things to do than to clean up dinner.
Once we had finished eating and everything was clean it was time to really get down to business. Nick loved helping me pack the toiletries (he loves playing with them), but he made a huge mess by taking everything out of the tubs I store it all in. Still he was happy and I was getting stuff done. I really couldn’t ask for more than that. We eventually took a break to give Nick a bath. He was wide awake after it though, so we decided to let him stay up a bit longer. For all three days that I had been home he had taken really long afternoon naps (three to four hours), and it was keeping him from wanting to go to sleep. When we were close to done Nick got really fussy. We tried to distract him with his favorite movie (Treasures of Disney Cruise Line), but he seemed to know something was up, so he just kept clinging to me. I finally got him to sit down and play with my jewelry, which made packing it a little difficult, but I got it done.
I was very happy that I was done packing by 9:00. I had hoped it would have been earlier, but compared to trips past I was doing great! As soon as I was done I took Nick upstairs to go to bed, and again he fought me on it. I actually had to let him cry because he was just so upset. He did calm down, but he was not a happy camper that night and we had to go up to him a lot. He kept dropping everything out of his crib including blinkie and blankie.
Once I left Nick’s room I went downstairs and Jason and I got to work on finishing the last things up. Jason packed the car with all of the luggage that was ready to go (minus the ones we would need in the morning). I worked on picking up the house. Then I took a shower and did my nails. During all of this was when we were still going up to calm Nick. Eventually he stopped fussing, but then he started playing. He just did not want to sleep. I finished my nails around 10:15 and I came out of the bathroom to find that Nick was still up! Jason and I sat down to relax and watch an episode of The Big Bang Theory, but we had a hard time concentrating because we kept focusing on Nick. We would go upstairs and try to get him to go to sleep, but nothing helped. Looking back on it now I don’t know why we bothered, but at the time we knew he’d be awful the next day if he didn’t get any sleep.
Jason and I both went to bed a little after 11:00. I had to turn the sound off on Nick’s monitor because he kept turning his crib toy on, and the sound of it keeps me from sleeping. I had a hard time falling asleep though because I kept thinking about Nick and turning the monitor back on to see if he was still awake. I had almost fallen asleep when I remembered that I hadn’t turned on the dishwasher, so I jumped out of bed which startled Jason. When I returned to bed I checked the monitor again and found that Nick had finally settled down. It was about 11:30 at that point. With Nick I asleep I was able to sleep as well, but I didn’t sleep great because I knew I had to get up soon and my migraine was making me miserable.
