Do you ever feel like you must be living under a rock? A few weeks ago when I was asked to review The Nut Job app I felt that way. The movie was just about to premier in theaters and I hadn’t even heard of it! It sounded cute though, and Nick seemed ready for a new game, so I decided to give it a try.
If you’re like me and you’ve not heard of this movie yet here is a quick run down of what it’s about. The story is about a squirrel named Surly who becomes exiled after he destroys the community’s winter supply of food. He then finds a nut store, and he works with others to raid it. Things aren’t what they seem though, and the store is actually a front for bank robbers. Still the animals persevere to get the nuts they need.
The app game is created by Cupcake Digital. As is standard for their apps a large focus is on the story based on the movie. Unlike others that we have though this story is not interactive. Instead it contains pictures from the movie. This app also includes 4 different games as well as a picture coloring area. The app also includes the movie trailer which is really nice for those of us that haven’t seen it yet!
Overall the app is quite cute and Nick has enjoyed his squirrel game, as he calls it. I like that all of the games start with a comic looking page that tells the part of the movie that the game is based on. I think it’s nice for kids to connect the point of the game to the movie. I have found that many of the games are a bit above Nick’s level though. I don’t always see that as a bad thing as it does help him grow, but it also means that he asks for help a lot when he plays this app. If he was just a tad older I don’t think it would really be a problem. He has improved with it recently, so this is less of a problem now. I do like to help him with one of the games though. It’s a lot like Candy Crush, but with nuts.
The Nut Job (The Official App for the Movie) is available for $1.99 both in the Amazon App Store and through iTunes.
