This Kid Knows What He Wants

Knowing What He Wants

Watching your child grow and develop his own thoughts and opinions is amazing.  It seems like out of nowhere your little baby has become a little person.

Nick certainly has entered this stage, and he has left the out of sight and out of mind stage behind.  My own mind isn’t quite ready to let go of the baby yet though. It’s still almost a shock to see him walking.  To see him want something, and then go after it, is mind boggling!

One of the main things he always wants are bubbles.  He knows right where they are, so he’ll go to the cupboard, get them, and bring them to us so he can play with them.  Sometimes the things that he wants are more random though.  For example, the other morning Nick kept reaching for the doorknob to our bedroom door.  I told him we couldn’t go in there because Daddy was still sleeping.  Nick wouldn’t give up though, so I eventually gave in and opened the door.  As soon as he got in the room he went right to the closet and tried to open that door (although he was using the hinges instead of the knob).  I opened the closet and he zeroed in on the change jar.  He loves playing with the coins (taking them out and putting them into the jar).  He had played with them some recently, but I was shocked that he wanted to play with them so much that he wouldn’t give up.  I grabbed the jar and he took off to the living room expecting me to bring the jar so he could play.

The hardest part of Nick knowing his mind so well is that he still can’t fully tell us what he wants.  On Sunday Nick was snuggling on my lap (he wasn’t feeling well) when he started struggling to get down.  As soon as he was on his feet he went right into the bathroom.  He started getting out his bath toys and throwing them into the tub.  After he threw some in he’d point to the spout.  I assumed he wanted a bath.  It was only 10 in the morning, but he was so unhappy, so I decided to let him have his bath.  As I ran the water he kept throwing more toys in.  Finally the bath was ready, so I went to take his clothes off.  As I started to take off his sweat jacket he freaked out on me.  He ran into the corner and hid.  He never did end up taking a bath.  I suppose he knew what he wanted, but it’s still a mystery to me!

  1. Haha- I have this all the time because he can’t tell me what he wanted. Z is beginning to talk but a lot of it is mumble jumble. And bubbles- a huge hit here too! He is just the cutest. I love that picture! What a happy boy!

  2. My middle son would point to what he wanted if it was something tangible. It helped but wasn’t always exact.

  3. Love the coin jar story, Austin has a similar obsession with wanting to grab our big bin of pretzels of late. But how sad with the bath. Hopefully he starts to feel better soon!

  4. It is so hard when they can’t tell you wat they want. I use to work with the girls on words over and over again. Sometimes they would get and other times not. It is a very trying time. . I know that you are a very good Mother and is very patented with him. Love to all.
