I Want To Go Outside!

Playing Outside

Nick is very much like his Uncle David in that he would live outside if he could.  He loves going outside.  From the beginning he loved to go for walks in the stroller, and when he was a newborn taking him outside was one of the only ways to calm him down when the witching hour hit.  Oh the hours of my life that I have spent staring at plants!  There is one way he differs from his Uncle David though, and that is that he doesn’t like the cold.  My brother now lives in Colorado and snowboards all winter long, but my son throws a fit if you take him outside in the cold.

This is a picture of Nick crying because we were outside in the cold.  He hates getting all of the snow gear on, and he hates being in the cold.  This meant that we spent a lot of this extremely long and cold winter shut up in the house.  It was awful!  To be honest I don’t like going out in the cold either, so I didn’t mind staying in.  Now that spring is slowly arriving Nick wants to go out all the time.  The problem is that while the outside might look warm that doesn’t mean it is.

Monday was one of those days.  When we got home in the afternoon I had to take the trash out, so I let Nick play some, but we didn’t stay long outside since I had to get dinner on the table.  I didn’t mind rushing in because the wind was pretty bitter.  Nick didn’t  want to come in though.  He actually rushed through his dinner, and as soon as I had taken my last bite he was dragging me (literally!) to the back door to tell me that he wanted to go back out.  I wasn’t very excited by the idea, but what can you do?

Since it was cold I bundled us up.  I put Nick in his push car and started to take him for a walk.  About half way through our walk though Nick got very cold.  He especially had cold fingers since he refuses to wear his mittens.  He ended up crying hysterically.  I had to leave him in the car crying for most of the walk back because he was too heavy to carry that far.  When we got close to home though I did pick him up.  I must have looked silly carrying the toddler and pushing the empty car.

When we got in the house I grabbed his blankie and snuggled with him in the glider until he calmed down and warmed up.  Then I tried to get him to start playing with his toys.  He didn’t want to play though, so he grabbed my hand and dragged me to the back door to let me know he wanted to go out and play again!  All I could do was laugh at him.  How quickly he forgot that he hadn’t liked being out in the cold!  Needless to say we did not go back outside.
