Letters to my Son - January 2015
January 2, 2015

Dear Nick,

Happy New Year Monkey!  I simply can’t believe that it’s 2015 already, but as I’ve been saying for awhile I’m not sad that 2014 is over.  I have feeling that this year will be so much better!  I can’t wait to see what this new year has in store for us.  December turned out to be a busy, but fun, month.  It was full of a birthday party, a Christmas parade, your school party, trips to the mall to ride on the “excavator” and play with the interactive floor game, a trip to The Henry Ford Museum, and of course Christmas fun! Just writing it all down is exhausting! We were simply going all month long.

Christmas Tree
One of the things we’ve worked on the most this month is to help you feel comfortable playing with other kids. You don’t have trouble at school, but in other situations you’ll sit out instead of playing with kids you don’t know. You come by being an introvert naturally, but I think it effects you even more than it does me. I know how hard it is to be in group situations that make you uncomfortable.  The daycare Christmas party especially upset you.  Of course it is a huge party.  You made Nana and I hide with you in the bathroom stall to escape it, and then you cried so much that we had to take you home. You were not about to go up and sing with the other kids.  We’ve been trying to help you by taking you to the mall to play. You love the interactive floor game there, but you don’t like when other kids come to play too. Eventually after enough coaxing you’ll play with the other kids and you always have a good time.  You had a hard time doing things when other people were around at The Henry Ford Museum too. Getting you to feel comfortable with other people around you is a slow going process, but we keep trying.

I Did It
Christmas was so much fun this year.  It seemed that every day you changed your mind of what you wanted Santa to bring (although I was impressed that you always wanted a new gift instead of another one instead of in addition to it), but by the end you were back to what you had first wanted (and what Santa was bringing you!).  You didn’t want to go see Santa, and that was OK with Mommy.  I still don’t want to go see Santa.  I wasn’t kidding when I said you came by your introvert tendencies naturally!  You were so excited for Christmas.  This was the first year that you got into it.  You didn’t even care about unwrapping the presents last year.  Every time you opened a present you’d get crazy excited and say that you got a box!  Only a 3 year old can get excited about a box!  You loved all of your presents and have had so much fun playing with them.

Opening Presents
Your imagination is really starting to take off which is so much fun to see.  I just love how creative you are.  You’re already really good at thinking outside of the box too.  The other night you wanted Nana and I to play outer space with you.  You have always been fascinated by the moon.  We had to get on the bed and put our seat belts on. Then you said that it was time to take our seat belts off and you knew that as soon as that happened that we would be floating around.  Oh you had so much fun.

Working on the Car
I’m not sure what this month will bring.  Usually January is one of those quiet months where we just want to stay home and keep warm.  Hopefully we won’t have to deal with as much snow as last January! If it’s not as cold that would really be nice too!  Now let’s get this longest month of the year started.

Love,

Mommy
