Letters To My Son – August 2015

Dear Nick,

Happy August monkey! It’s hard to believe that summer vacation is now entering the second half. Where is time going? The good news is that with Labor Day being so late we still have another month before we go back to school. I keep seeing pictures of other kids going back to school and can’t help but think about the fact that I’m not ready for that yet! Although I have to admit that we’re starting to feel a little stir crazy. You’ve hit the point in the summer where your toys have lost most of their excitement. You’re even kind of bored with playing at the park! Good thing we have fun plans for tomorrow because you need a change of scenery.

July turned out to be a fairly quiet month. That actually could be part of the reason why you’re getting so bored with everything. We simply didn’t do much. Every week was basically the same as the week before. Of course that is not always a bad thing! You did get invited to a birthday party at a pool that was a lot of fun. Well, at least it was until you fell and scraped your knee up pretty bad.

You did have your yearly allergy appointment this month. You had a harder time with the scratch test than you have in the past, but you still did well. The scratch test was positive, but as before your blood test showed numbers in the negative range. They’d like you to do a food challenge test. That’s where you go to the clinic for a three hour appointment and you slowly eat a piece of french toast and they monitor you for an allergic reaction. I think I’m going to wait another year for you to do the challenge though. You’re still picky about food, so I don’t want to go in for the appointment and have you refuse to eat the french toast. Hopefully in a year you’ll be able to understand that you NEED to eat it.

You are really into numbers and letters right now. I bought you a Team Umizoomi book and I was really impressed when you counted the numbers listed without any help.  You learned some letters when we did homeschooling, but that has kind of gone by the wayside. You liked the learning, but you really wanted to use the time to play with Mommy. Plus for Mommy it became a bit much to teach school during my time off. I must say I’m impressed with all of those parents that home school because I have come to find it’s very hard to teach your own child! When you don’t want to do something I have no desire to battle with you over it.

The start of July seemed long because we were almost trapped inside. The weather wasn’t so bad (although there was quite a bit of rain), but the problem was the mosquitoes. They were so bad that we were getting bit in all outdoor locations at all times of the day. They were even getting inside and eating us up there too!

I got a great deal on an outside playhouse for you. You wanted to play with it so badly when you saw it that we actually went out in pants and jackets just to stay protected from being eaten alive! Of course you had so much fun that you didn’t care about how hot it was!  Luckily the damp weather has gone away and now it’s safer to go outside to play with your pool and at the park.

It’ll be interesting to see how August goes. We have a few things planned, but for the most part I think it’ll be another quiet month. Of course with next month comes the start of school. I think I’ll relish in the slow and sometimes boring days! I don’t think either one of us want to go back to our school rountes. Here’s to another month of quiet time together!
