Day After Christmas Shopping Tips
Everyone always talks about Black Friday shopping. It seems like most of the country can’t wait for Thanksgiving to be done so they can get out to the stores to snag the best deals. There are a lot of great deals to be had, but I have never had a desire to deal with the craziness of Black Friday. I’ve been known to take advantage of great deals online on Black Friday, or Cyber Monday, but otherwise I really don’t participate in them. The shopping day that I like to focus on instead is day after Christmas shopping. I love taking advantage of all of the deals on leftover Christmas items. Why buy them for full price when you can stock up on them at a discounted price? Best of all you’ll be all ready to go next year, and you won’t have to pay a lot more money for things that you need then.

Preparing for Day After Christmas Shopping
- The very first thing you need to do is figure out what you need to buy, and from there decide which of those items you need the most. This is a very important step as it will play a part big part in the other steps.
- Next you need to decide what stores you want to go to. The things you need should play a part in this decision. For example, if all of your Christmas lights burnt out like mine did last year than you’ll want to make sure that you go to a store that sells the type of lights you need.
- Once you know what you need and where you’re going to go it’s time to make a game plan. To do this you’ll need to figure out at what times the stores that you want to visit open. The closer you can be to the exact opening time the more likely you’ll be to get what you want. Some stores, such as Target, open up far earlier than other stores, so you’ll want to hit those first. Once you’ve got your day mapped out all you have to do is wait for the 26th!
Tips for Day After Christmas Shopping
- Go with family/friends. This is a fun shopping day, and it’s best spent with others. Two years ago I ended up shopping on my own because my mother came down with the stomach flu (Nick passed it around), and it wasn’t any fun at all!
- You’re going to find that opening times really vary, and some of the stores open quite early. My best advice is to hit the early stores and then go out for a nice breakfast while you wait for the later stores to open. It really adds to the day.
- Don’t go crazy! It’s so easy to want to buy a lot. Last year I went way overboard on kid wrapping paper. Before last Christmas I had very little of it, and now I probably don’t need more until Nick’s 10! Remember you have to store whatever you buy, so make sure you actually need it.
- Pay attention to the sales. Most stuff will have a major mark down, but sometimes certain items aren’t included. It’s not always easy to notice that fact because things often get moved around, so pay attention to what the signs say. You don’t want to get stuck up front with a cart full of things that are only marked down a small amount.
What tips do you have for shopping the day after Christmas?

I must admit I hate crowds so tend not to do sales shopping! Such a frugalista!
Luckily these sales are usually not terribly busy and crazy like other sale shopping days. I can only handle so much when it comes to crowds too. I’ll often leave a store before waiting in a REALLY long line to pay.
I totally hate Black Friday but love to go shopping the day after Christmas, thanks for the great info.
It’s TOTALLY easy to want to buy a lot. I fall for that one every year.
xo
It is! I’m usually pretty good at not over spending on things, but I have a hard time with that on the day after Christmas!
Thanks for the tips. I’ve found making a thorough list to be so helpful, as it’s easy to get distracted by great deals on other things, and forget the new lights or whatever.
I used to go out the day after Christmas, but now it ends up being a travel day instead, so I don’t get out for a couple days after.
Oh that’s a bummer! At least you can still snag deals later, even if it isn’t first pick.
Super tips–I too love the days after for restocking the Christmas supplies and I like finding gift set–I take them apert and make up my own baskets for next year =)
What a great idea! I need to remember this one.
I’ve never gone day-after-Christmas shopping but maybe I will this year. I’m sure there are tons of deals, probably better than Black Friday!
There are! Not just on Christmas stuff either. They know that people are going to make returns that day, and that a lot of people have new gift cards, so other things are marked down as well.
These are great reminders. I love after holiday sales and I often stock up on essentials for next year. I try not to pay full price for wrapping paper unless i have too.
Very smart! I admit that I bought new paper this year for Nick because I found Jake and the Never Land Pirates paper. After that my mother told me to walk away from the paper! LOL
